Explore our Ohio Heritage!

Johnny Appleseed

MEET JOHNNY APPLESEED as he shares his life story, mission and passion in an interactive program of story, song and pioneer humor for the whole family!

Johnny Appleseed, born John Chapman (September 26, 1774 - February 18, 1845), was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced the apple to large parts of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. He became an American legend while still alive, largely because of his kind and generous ways, his great leadership in conservation, and the symbolic and real importance of apples.

PLANT YOUR OWN TAKE HOME MEDICINAL GARDEN! LET'S DO IT!!
Your instructor is Maureen Burns, CEO of The Herbal Sage Tea Company. Her craft as a blender of superb teas is grounded in her studies with nationally recognized herbal authorities. Over the years, Maureen, a gifted teacher, has opened many hearts to the wisdom of plants. In her class you will learn the health benefits of herbal remedies and how they can impact your family's health and well-being. Learn what herbs grow well in this region. Each participant will have their choice of 5 medicinal plants, included in the cost of the class. These plants retail for $5.00 each, but are included in your cost of the hands on class!

You will receive an extensive handout, exploring many medicinal plants that grow well in this region. Participants will learn the plants taxonomy, specific growing conditions, and the plants medicinal uses and applications.

You may bring your own heirloom container, buy a traditional container from Maureen, or take your 5 medicinal herbs home to plant in their own garden.
    • Class size: 20
    • Fee: $35.00
    • Time: Every day at 2:15. You may register directly with Maureen by clicking here.

MAKING A DREAM CATCHER WITH JOHN FINSEL
Meet John Finsel, Master Gardener and a grand human interested in nature and the earth. "I have traced my roots and found I had an Iroquois background dating to pre-revolutionary times. My Native American name is John Climbing Bear. I like using willow, as this is a renewable resource. I cut any weed stalks to make my own beads. And I am always looking for unusual seedpods to use in making my Dream Catchers. I use artificial sinew to make the web." Sioux Indian legend says that the night air is filled with dreams both good and bad. The good dreams know the way, slipping through the outer holes and slide down the soft feathers so gently that many times the sleeper does not know that he/she is dreaming. The bad dreams not knowing the way, get tangled in the web and perish with the first light of the new day. Time about 45 minutes.
    • Class size: 10
    • Fee: $10 and includes beads, willow circle, feathers, natural leafs and assorted natural seed pods. All material provided with instruction sheet.
    • Times: Daily at 10:15 and 2:15

HYPTERTUFA GARDEN CONTAINER WORKSHOP WITH KEITH BARTON & THE PORTAGE COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS
What is HyperTufa? It is a light artificial stone that yields gorgeous and long lasting garden troughs (plant containers), fake rocks and boulders, stepping stones, wonderfully whimisical garden spheres and all sorts of decorative garden accents. You can carve it, color it or add mosaic pieces to it. Smooth it over a form or mold, let it properly cure (dry) and you'll have a very durable DIY garden art treasure for years to come. For this class you will make a round bowl planter. Bring pine cones, polished rocks, anything you'd like to inlay or imprint in your planter.
    • Class Size: 20
    • Fee: $20 includes a completed HyperTufa Planter to take home plus plus bowl mold for reuse. Also includes necessary gloves, material, take home instructions and recipe so you can do it again.
    • Times: Every day at 11:15

INTRODUCTION TO PORTRAIT ARTISTRY ... YES YOU CAN!!

Tap into your creative side with a drawing workshop that provides an introduction to drawing portraits.
